Case Study

Title: Road Repair - Maryland Transportation Authority
Scope: Partial Depth Repair
Purpose: To demonstrate Pavemend SLQ™ and Pavemend TR™ as a rapid repair material.
Location: Fort McHenry Toll Plaza Northbound Lane 7.
Contact: Maryland Transportation Authority
Date: February 23, 2005

Procedure & Observations:
CERATECH personnel arrived on site to perform an application of Pavemend SLQ™ (5.0) and Pavemend TR™ as an introduction to our family of products. The underlying principle for this application is to exhibit the ability to utilize Pavemend as a repair element focused on high traffic areas subjected to varying loads.

The site consisted of an exterior slab with varying degrees of degradation and spalling. The repair sections (two site ~2’ x 2’ x 4”) were prepared by the Transportation Authority’s Fort McHenry maintenance crews prior to our arrival on site. The sites were taken down to the re-enforcing steel which provided ample surface area for adhesion and embedment. After inspection and removal of residual elements of the failed host, the area was swept clean to remove any contaminants.

The application was on an exterior slab with ambient and surface temperatures of ~43°F, material temperatures of 68°F and a starting water temperature of 78°F. To help increase productivity, warmer water was brought on-site and used. An average mixing time of 3.25’ was encountered when utilizing the Pavemend SLQ™ (5.0) and 4.5’ for Pavemend TR™. All materials were mixed to their respective critical mix temperature (92°F for Pavemend SLQ™ (5.0) & 90°F for Pavemend TR™) before placement. The parameter of the repair site was utilized to bring the application to grade.

The product was mixed by CERATECH representatives to demonstrate proper technique. CERATECH personnel placed the product to display ease of use and the engineered properties of the product. Saw cutting of the joints commenced 2 hours after final set. The repair site was opened to traffic within one hour of material cure.
